Program Title:
Disney’s lessons learned on their road to Lean implementation
Speakers:
David Van Wyk
As Vice President, Project Management for Walt Disney Imagineering, David oversees the planning, design, construction, installation and turnover for projects located at Disney’s Anaheim Theme Park Resort. Headquartered in Glendale, California, Walt Disney Imagineering is the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management and research and development arm of the Walt Disney Company.
David has been an Imagineer for 30 years working on projects located in Florida’s Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, Anaheim’s Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Recent completed works include World of Color, Toy Story Midway Mania, Finding Nemo, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and Space Mountain.
Currently, David oversees teams working to add and transform Attractions, restaurants, shops and area development within Disney California Adventure. He continues to be an advocate for Integrated Project Delivery and a student of lean construction techniques. As one of Imagineering’s first project teams to utilize Integrated Project Delivery, he works with engineers, architects, designers, contractors and construction managers as they move through this new delivery method.
Residing in Southern California, David is a registered architect and a member of the Los Angeles Chapter of the AIA.
Abstract:
Three years ago, Walt Disney Imagineering began initial steps towards delivering projects through BIM enabled Integrated Project Delivery. With a “Big Room beginning”, WDI led a collaborative team of designers, architects, engineers, trade partners and construction managers through the process of design and construction to a successful turnover of the Little Mermaid project. In the spirit of continuous learning, the WDI Team has a number of takeaways based on collective input. Please join David Van Wyk as he discusses the motivation behind their shift in delivery and what they have learned.

Lean Construction Institute (LCI)
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Los Angeles Area Community of Practice is being developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the LA Area. We invite project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share and develop a lean community in the LA Area. For further assistance please contact lci-los-angeles@leanconstruction.org
